Description
Albino lung fish, named Gorbachev, is a very rare to see !! Even the aquarium where surprised when they 5 year old turn yellow and then the colour change lighter for next 10 years.
Unlike most fishes, the Australian Lungfish has the unique ability to breathe air using a single lung when during dry periods streams become stagnant, or when water quality changes.
The Australian Lungfish is a long, heavy bodied freshwater fish with five pairs of gills and fins which resemble flippers. Adult lungfish can grow to more than 1.5 metres and weight up to 40 kilograms. The Australian Lungfish is the sole Australian survivor of a family of fishes that have been around since the dinosaurs. Fossil remains of this species have been found in New South Wales dating from more than 100 million years ago.
Today the Australian Lungfish is restricted to south-eastern Queensland in Australia.
The lungfishes first appeared in the fossil record 380 million years ago. They are relics of ancient fish groups that were related to the ancestors of amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
Today human activities currently threaten the Queensland lungfish, particularly water development. Lots more needs to be done to keep this amazing fish safe !!
In addition to the listing of the Australian Lungfish as a nationally threatened species under the EPBC Act, the species is protected from fishing under the Queensland Fisheries Act 1994. Under the Queensland Act, a permit is required to collect this species for eligible purposes such as educational display, aquaculture and research. The Australian Lungfish is also listed on Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) .
Taken at Sydney Aquarium in Darling harbour , NSW, Australia.
