Description
While this is rare in many part of the world, the phenomenon is harmless and can be seen on a more regular basis, particularly in subpolar regions and northern Australia, according to NASA.
The rare bloom of a phytoplankton called coccolithophores. Like any other type of phytoplankton, coccolithophores are one-celled marine plants that live in large numbers throughout the upper layers of the ocean.
Phytoplankton use chlorophyll to capture energy from the sun to convert water and carbon dioxide into the organic compounds. Through this process, called photosynthesis, phytoplankton generate about half of the oxygen we breathe.
The beautiful phenomena I seen from Fairfax walk in North Head, Sydney, Australia, near the cliff where ocean enters Sydney harbour.
