Description
Close up of sleeping bare nose wombat (also called common wombat) from Wildlife sanctuary in Darling harbour.
I would love to see a wombat in the wild one day, but I never even seem them awake at the Zoo yet. But I am gonne keep trying !
Wombats are Australian marsupial mammals that have very short muscular legs and are the closest relative to the Koala. They have a backwards facing pouch so that when they are nursing young in their pouch they can still dig burrows and not fill their pouch with soil!
Despite its name, the common wombat is no longer common, and it has been officially a protected animal in New South Wales since 1970. However, in eastern Victoria, they are not protected, and they are considered by some to be pests, especially due to the damage they cause to rabbit-proof fences.[
