Description
This photograph was taken by an unknown photographer sometime before 1870s of Bare Island , Botany bay, Sydney, how long before, we don't know.
I just enlarged it a bit and painted it with colours which I matched from my own photos of Botany Bay. This helped to hide all the big cracks through the ocean and sky.
The original photograph was saved and made public by Mitchell Library, State Library of New South Wales, Australia.
Botany's earliest residents were the Aboriginal people who have lived in the Botany area for over 9,000 years. But when they first arrived the weather and sea levels would have been different , or possibly similar to today and then the wheather change. I am not sure. And this research has now either been forgotten or is not used in our learning models and schools.
In 1800s we know there were salt marshes around Botany Bay , ~6 000 years before that the same bay supported a large marine mammal, the Dugong, now only found in warmer waters, as Etheridge and his coauthors concluded: . . . the natural inference is that conditions more akin to those of the north-east Queensland coast existed there at that period . . .
So 6000 years ago weather in Sydney was tropical and sea levels were higher, so half of this island could have been submerge under water.
