Description
Plants of the lake provided the local Aboriginal people, known as Jerrinja people, with food, medicine, shelter and tools.
The seagrass and algae are the foundation of the life on the lake.
Shellfish are eaten by Jerrinja people and were once discarded at the same sites around the lake. These are called Middens and can be very large. As the organic matter of the middens breaks down , it provides nutrients and minerals for the plants life, completing the cycle of life of the lake in the past.
A new sign on the shores (info from it I written above ) of Lake Wollumboola will serve as a permanent reminder of the indigenous heritage of the area. Speaking at the launch of the sign, Jerrinja Elder, Delia Lowe said the sign represented part of the reconciliation process by actively engaging non-Aboriginal people to see the traditional and contemporary connections with Lake Wollumboola.
Lake Wollumboola is located on the NSW South Coast, south of Culburra Beach, between the Shoalhaven River and Jervis Bay and the Beecroft Peninsula. The Lake, sand bar and south west part of the catchment are included in the Jervis Bay National Park.
