Description
These irons were on display in Spirit of Anzac exhibition, Life between 1901 to 1914, before WW1. However these irons were used way before and easily until 1950s.
Irons used to be quite heavy and mothers used to be very particular about the appearance of their weekly wash. So everything had to be ironed.
The irons were made of cast iron, and there were two sorts which needed to be heated different way.
One sort was known as a 'flat iron' (in the pic) which came in pairs, so that one could be in use while the other was heating up.
It was quite a skill to get the washing to the right dampness for ironing, because if it was too dry, the creases wouldn't iron out. Yet if it was too wet the washing creased again immediately afterwards.
The washing was carefully folded so the dampness would spread evenly through it by the next day for ironing, or sprinkle of water had to be carefully added .
Blacksmiths started forging first simple flat irons in the late Middle Ages in Europe .

As a photographer's daughter, I grew up thinking flat irons were for taking the curl out of freshly developed prints after they dried. I bet I was a teen before I realized women actually ironed with these things! Nice capture! l/f

Nice capture. My Gran had a couple of these flat irons and used them as doorstops. Great memories. l/f
