History knows things we have forgotten , and we can never forget to stop learning …..
Cruises are a popular attraction for people on vacation, but a report card rating cruise lines’ efforts to reduce pollution may come as a rude shock.
An average cruise ship carrying 3,000 passengers and crew generates 21,000 gallons of sewage a day, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Plus large diesel engines can emit dangerous levels of sulfur dioxide and course 14 000 premature air pollution deaths.
Unfortunately, there are also regular stories of whales that have been injured or killed following a collision with a ship – since 1975, there have been 80 confirmed contacts (NOAA – hawaiihumpbackwhale.noaa.gov) between humpback whales and a vessel around Hawaii alone, and more contacts may go unreported. Whales that are still endangered such as the North-Atlantic and Southern Right Whale often don’t react to ships in the area, and move very slowly, putting them at higher risk of a collision.
In USA Foe’s report card, the sixth from the US nonprofit, assigned 17 cruise lines and their 171 ships a grade between A and F in four categories: sewage treatment, water quality, air pollution reduction and transparency. Some companies, like Disney Cruise Line and Norwegian Cruise Line, earned an A in at least two categories. But most of them, such as Carnival Cruise Lines and Silversea Cruises, scored on the low end. Crystal Cruises and Costa Cruises received mostly Fs.
However cruise ship like Oases of the Seas despite its size is the world’s most environmentally-friendly cruise ship, reuses all its water and discharges no sewage into the sea.
So next time you choose a cruise ship to go on, find out what engine it has and how it recycle its sewage !!!!!
