Description
A rare genetic mutation is behind the golden colour of this possum, its a result in low levels of melanin in their skin and fur.
These golden possums are one of Australia’s largest tree-dwelling marsupials but are rarely seen in the wild. Most golden brushtail possums are found in Tasmania where predators are few.
May 7, 2010 - Sydney Wildlife World's rare Golden Brushtail possum has been rearing its latest joey, Stella. The baby Golden Brushtail Possum has grown in the pouch over the last four months from the size of a jellybean. Mum and dad Cascade and Boags (named after the beers) gave birth to 3 babies so far in Wildlife Sanctuary at Darling harbour. But I can only see one golden possum in the dark enclosure which recreates nighttime during day so you can see the possum eating and being active.
Possums are protected under the Wildlife Act 1975. Possums must not be harmed in any way or kept without approval from DELWP. It is illegal to harass or interfere with possums. However, common brushtail possums living within buildings, municipal parks and municipal gardens may be controlled by relocation !!!
