Description
Pak Boon means 'Morning Glory Flower' and she is Taronga Zoo elephant and her now underwater one and half year old baby is Tukta. (pic taken 2012). She actually sprayed water towards the crowed watching her !!!
Pak Boon originally came from an elephant camp on the outskirts of Bangkok in Thailand. She can be very eager to please and seeks attention from keepers, although at times can be a real ‘drama queen'.
Pak Boon is well respected by all the elephants and gave birth to her first calf named Tukta, which is Thai for 'doll' on the 2nd November 2010 at 1.12am. Pak Boon demonstrated wonderful maternal instincts throughout the birth process and is proving to be an excellent and protective mother for Tukta.
Pak Boon has pink pigmented forehead , trunk and cheeks and she has a significant amount of long hair on the top of her head. She has no tushes (female tusks). It could be covered by mud , and between shadows and water not so visible in pics, or its a different elephant.
The earliest indications of captive use of Asian elephants are engravings on seals of the Indus Valley civilization dated to the third millennium BC.
A conservation breeding program is a vital part of the international effort towards elephant management. This regional conservation breeding program is designed to build a self-sustaining population of Asian Elephants in Australia, to learn more about caring for this super intelligent creature, we still fully don't understand.
Asian elephants live in the wild in India and Southeast Asia including Sumatra and Borneo. Their former range stretched from the region south of the Himalayas throughout Southeast Asia and into China north to the Yangtze River.
