Description
Cathy Freeman was born in 1973 in Mackay (Queensland). Her mother is of the Kuku Yalanji people of far north Queensland and along with her grandmother was born in the Indigenous community of Palm Island. She was a strict parent and into healthy eating. Her father was born in Woorabinda and is of the the Burri Gubba people of central Queensland. He was an ex- Rugby League player when Cathy was five he was diagnosed with diabetes, which prevented him from playing football, and he became an alcoholic.
Freeman's late grandfather, Frank Fisher was an outstanding Rugby League player.
Her major highlights both on and off the track include:
Olympic Gold medallist (400m, Sydney 2000)
Olympic Silver medallist (400m, Atlanta 1996)
Lit the Olympic Flame (Sydney 2000)
Member of the IOC Sport and Active Society Commission (2016)
Co-Founder and Director, Cathy Freeman Foundation (2007 – present)
