Description
The green budgi seeing if he can share with the Princess parrots . The budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus), also known as the common parakeet or shell parakeet and informally nicknamed the budgie, is a small, long-tailed, seed-eating parrot.
here’s a lot of debate out there about the origins of the term “budgerigar.” Many believe that it is derived from the aboriginal word “betchegara,” which means “good to eat.” Others think that it comes from various Australian slang terms. For example, “budgery” means “good,” and “gar” means “cockatoo.” It is possible that the two terms were put together to create the name of the lovable pet parrot that is so popular today.
Since its introduction into captivity, the Budgerigar (or 'budgie') has been bred into a variety of colour forms, including pure white, blue, yellow, mauve, olive and grey. In the wild, Budgerigars are naturally small green and yellow with black, scalloped markings on the nape, back and wings, .
The Budgerigar occurs naturally throughout much of mainland Australia and are often seen in large flocks where the species has survived harsh inland conditions for the last five million years.
The colourful princess parrot (Polytelis alexandrae) is an Australian bird of the parrot family. Its name was given in honour of Princess Alexandra of Denmark, who later married the Prince of Wales Edward VII and eventually became the Queen of England. Other names for the species include: Queen Alexandra parrot (or parakeet), Alexandra's parakeet, Princess of Wales parakeet, rose-throated parakeet, and spinifex parrot. Their plumage is mostly green with a pink throat, bluish crown and rump, and bright green shoulders.
WILD LIFE Sydney Zoo has an array of Princess Parrots and budgerigar which you can find in their Kangaroo Walk-about exhibit.
