Description
Fluorescent Coral South Coast Australia
Corals are marine invertebrates of the class Anthozoa. They are small polyps that excrete calcium carbonate to form a hard “skeleton”, and most typically clump together to form reefs. A coral head may contain as many as several thousand individual polyps. Corals obtain most of their nutrients from algae called zooxanthellae that live within the polyp. Zooxanthallae use photosynthesis to produce food from sunlight.
Coral reefs are under stress around the world. In particular, coral mining, agricultural and urban runoff, pollution (organic and inorganic), overfishing, blast fishing, disease, and the digging of canals and access into islands and bays are localized threats to coral ecosystems.
