Description
Spinifex sericeus, commonly known as hairy spinifex, rolling spinifex, beach spinifex or coastal spinifex, is a dioecious perennial grass. Dioecious plant means that the female and male flowers are born on separate plants.
It’s the female plants of the Spinifex grass, which bear the funky tumbleweed seed heads. The female flowers are clustered in tight, globular heads while the male flowers are on erect spikes. The flowers appear in August – October.
Spinifex seed heads are very cool to look at - but they also serve an important purpose. Their job is to act as vehicles to colonise new areas - they often end up buried by sand, at the very front of dune systems. Once established, Spinifex plants bind loose sand together, and act as the land’s first line of defence against waves.
This is a very tough, sand binding grass. Colonising the dune, it provides habitat for crustaceans and insects and other critters along the shore.
