Description
I am still trying to work out where is this street ??? I took the picture from old silent film taken at Spirit of Anzac exhibition.
The Commonwealth of Australia came into being when the Federal Constitution was proclaimed by the Governor General, Lord Hopetoun, on 1 January 1901.
Edmund Barton, the first Prime Minister of Australia, promised to "create a high court,... and an efficient federal public service.... He proposed to extend conciliation and arbitration, create a uniform railway gauge between the eastern capitals, to introduce female federal franchise, to establish a... system of old age pensions". He also promised to introduce legislation to safeguard "White Australia" from any influx of Asian or Pacific Island labour.
1902, Brisbane was accorded city status.
1903, Alfred Deakin became prime minister. In December women voted for the first time and four women stood for the Senate.
The Harvester Judgment of 1907 recognised the concept of a basic wage and in 1908 the Federal government also began an old age pension scheme.
Also in 1908 the Great White Fleet sent by President Roosevelt arrives in Australia at Alfred Deakin's request and Canberra is selected for the site of a national capital city.
In 1909, compulsory military training was enacted.
Most men and also women & children from poor families usually had to work exceptionally long hours, in poor conditions and received little pay in return. Awards, such as the four weeks annual leave that Australian workers are entitled to today, were inconceivable.
Catastrophic droughts plagued some regions in the late 1890s and early 20th century and together with a growing rabbit plague, created great hardship in rural Australia.
Poor housing conditions for working class and luck of sanitation and luck of money to afford doctors ment that diseases like whooping cough, diptheria , tuberculosis where rampant. The outbreak of bubonic plaque in Sydney in early 1900s course over 500 death nation wide.
Average age expectancy was about 55.
In 1910, Australian Commonwealth silver coins were introduced. In 1911, bronze pennies and halfpennies were introduced.
The first Australian bank notes based on the British system of 12 pence to a shilling and 20 shillings to a pound were introduced in 1913.
